Girdwood Fire & Rescue runs on a hybrid career and volunteer crew model. Volunteers are the backbone of our response — trained to the same standards, trusted with the same calls.

Elite Training

Wildland fire (S-130/S-190), structural, technical rope, ice rescue, EMT pathway.

Real Mountain Ops

Calls range from highway response to backcountry rescue and wildland deployment.

Community Impact

What We Ask

Minimum Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Maintain residence within the Municipality of Anchorage.
  • Maintain a valid Alaska driver's license.
  • Submit a State of Alaska Background investigation with application packet.
  • Submit a driving record check with application packet.
  • 48 hours per month of shift coverage (can be broken down into 6 hour shifts).
  • 50% attendance to Tuesday Night Training at the fire station.

FAQ

Common Questions

Can members be just Firefighters or just EMS providers?Members may specialize in one or the other but will be required to learn basic fire and EMS skills and may have to respond to both Fire and EMS calls.
Do I need prior EMS or Fire experience?No, but preference will be given to those individuals with Advanced EMS and Fire certifications.
What time commitment is needed to be a member?2-year commitment preferred, 1-year commitment required. We begin with a training academy scheduled over three weekends, followed by a minimum 90-day probationary period.
